Opening Bell Report

The markets opened higher as U. S. Airways made an unsolicited $8 billion offer for Delta. The Dow gained 27 points to 12,245 while Nasdaq climbed 11 points to 2442.

On the upside

(LCC) U. S. Airways offered $8 billion of purchase bankrupt Delta.
(RRA) Fortress Investment Group will take RailAmerica for approximately $640 million.

(VNDA) Vanda Pharmaceuticals reported positive test results for its insomnia treatment VEC-162.

(CMVT) Comverse Technology discovered more accounting problems during its internal investigation into stock option practices.

(ANF) Although Abercrombie & Fitch reported higher earnings, the teen retailer disappointed by not lifting its fourth quarter outlook.

(SPC) Spectrum Brands blamed an impairment charge for widening fourth quarter losses.

In the broad market, advancing issues outpaced decliners by a margin of nearly 5 to 3 on the NYSE and by more than 7 to 5 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks clijmbed 5 points to 790.
